The Hunter S. Thompson quote is still carved into the stone at 127 W. Alder St. It outlasted the James Bar, which poured its last drinks on July 25 after nearly two decades. Now it hangs over the door of Atomic Tacos, a Kalispell restaurant whose opening in the space was reported by Eagle 93.3. The quote stayed partly because it is cut into the building itself, which made removing it a challenge.
That carved line sums up downtown's food scene this fall. Several familiar counters closed in 2026. Each closing came paired with a named successor, sometimes announced in the same message as the farewell, and in one case the departing brand reopened a few miles away. Heading into November, downtown has a set of new tenants moving in behind old landmarks. They are on a schedule that runs straight into the first Saturday in December.
The Alder Street Handoff Was Announced Before the Last Call
The James Bar's own closing announcement named the next tenant. Kalispell-based Atomic Tacos would take over 127 W. Alder St. and turn it into its own restaurant and bar, according to the announcement as summarized by Zootown Lowdown. Over the summer the Missoulian's Business Buzz noted the restaurant was hiring, with a sign on the door promising an October opening. It also called this the company's first foray into the Missoula market.
The doors are now open. Eagle 93.3 reports hours of Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., based on the restaurant's social media announcement. The Missoulian lists frybread tacos, chicken taquitos, tacos al pastor and birria quesadillas on the menu. In practice, Alder Street now has a Mexican lunch counter where a late-night bar used to be, and it closes at 9 p.m. Sunday and Monday are dark.
Liquid Planet Moved Back Downtown, Not Out of Missoula
The second change is a company coming back. Earlier in 2026, Liquid Planet closed its Liquid Planet Grille on Brooks Street, the same corridor where Midtown redevelopment is already reshaping familiar businesses. We covered that stretch in Brooks Street Is Trading a Taproom for a Plaza.
On October 5, Liquid Planet opened a new downtown location with a drive-thru at 400 W. Broadway. It shares the building with The UPS Store and CubCloud AI, according to Newstalk KGVO. The company's own announcement, quoted by KGVO, called it a return "to our original downtown roots."
That leaves Liquid Planet with two Missoula locations, the new Broadway shop and the one on Arthur Avenue at the University campus. The drive-thru is the practical change for anyone whose morning route runs along Broadway. A downtown coffee stop that doesn't involve finding parking is new to that corridor.
Four Departures, Four Arrivals
Lined up side by side, the fall turnover follows one pattern. Three are handoffs of the same space, and the fourth is a brand moving to a new address:
| What closed or left | What opened next | Where | Status heading into November |
|---|---|---|---|
| James Bar, last day July 25 | Atomic Tacos, in the same space | 127 W. Alder St. | Open Tuesday–Saturday, 11 a.m.–9 p.m. |
| Liquid Planet Grille on Brooks Street | A new Liquid Planet location with a drive-thru | 400 W. Broadway | Opened October 5 |
| Calypso sandwich shop on Front Street | Pastrami Franks, in the same space | Former Calypso space, ROAM building | Targeting December |
| Calypso's University Center location | Tagliare Delicatessen, third Missoula location | University Center food court | Scheduled to start serving August 24 |
Two of these are local or regional operators expanding into new Missoula addresses. One is a hometown brand returning to its downtown roots. The fourth is a new concept moving into a vacated storefront. None of them is a national chain filling a gap.
The Front Street Space Has a December Tenant Lined Up
The Calypso sandwich shop, on the bottom level of the ROAM student housing building on Front Street, has closed permanently. It also closed its location inside the University Center on campus, according to the Missoulian. The same report said the Front Street spot "won't be empty for long." Pastrami Franks announced on social media that it will open there and serve "big flavor, old-school hot dogs and piled-high pastrami."
Newstalk KGVO describes it as a brick-and-mortar restaurant. Its menu centers on old-school hot dogs, signature half-pound pastrami sandwiches piled with toppings, and freshly baked rolls. The target is December 2026, and as Zootown Lowdown put it, "openings slip." For now, the safest plan is to treat December as the goal, not a promise.
Campus Got Its Own Swap
The same pattern reached the University of Montana. Calypso's University Center counter closed, and Tagliare Delicatessen opened its third Missoula location in the University Center food court. A UM Dining Services post reported by Z100 had it scheduled to start serving students on August 24. Anyone crossing campus for a game, a lecture or a visit to the UC now has a Missoula-grown sandwich shop where a different one used to be.
December Is When the New Lineup Meets the Biggest Downtown Crowd
Holidays on Higgins, the Downtown Missoula Partnership's annual kickoff to the season, is on Saturday, December 5, 2026. The event used to be called the Parade of Lights and is held every year on the first Saturday in December. Admission is free. That puts it in the same month Pastrami Franks is aiming to open, and in Atomic Tacos' first holiday season on Alder Street.
This year the evening portion runs an hour longer, from 3 to 7 p.m., which the Partnership attributes to high demand. The Holidays on Higgins page lists the main pieces:
- Tree lighting with Santa in front of the North Higgins Train Station
- A stationary float parade along Higgins Avenue starting at Broadway, with floats parked so visitors walk past them
- The Missoula Makers Collective market, with at least 40 local makers along North Higgins
- Free hot chocolate at the Missoula Downtown Foundation tent, two Rhino bars serving adult beverages and mocktails, and food and coffee vendors including Lighthouse Coffee, Funk It Coffee, Pelz and pizza
The stretch of North Higgins from Broadway is a few blocks from the new Liquid Planet at 400 W. Broadway and from Atomic Tacos on Alder Street. December 5 is a Saturday, inside Atomic Tacos' Tuesday-through-Saturday hours. For anyone planning dinner around the tree lighting, the old James Bar address now has a kitchen to anchor the evening.
Where the Downtown Map Stands Heading Into November
As of the last week of October, the downtown food changes come down to three things. Atomic Tacos is serving under the carved quote on Alder Street. The Liquid Planet drive-thru has been open on West Broadway for a few weeks. Pastrami Franks is working toward a December opening in the former Calypso space on Front Street. Outside downtown, Great Burn Brewing plans to keep pouring at 2230 McDonald Ave. through the end of 2026 while it looks for a new home in Midtown or the Southside.
